The first mistake is the best mistake.

This is the image that turned me on to painting portraits of people without faces. These are the lyrics for a Torch Singer (the band I play in) song, Eating crackers and crying. It's a fun process: the guitar player will write a song (guitar only) and say this is called "Eating crackers and crying." So then I start to write and draw to that name. In this instance I start to wonder: How does someone get to that point in life—eating crackers and crying? And where would they be? What would they do for a living? and on and on...I bring in things that I've been writing. There must be a connection between what I'm doing and what other people are doing on a given day, however unconnected they pretend to be. When I first heard this song I thought of two lines instantly: "Outside the carniceria the old folk music plays." and "Late at night I sing the blues."
