Flattop: Annihilation, catastrophe

Since the beginning of the project I've had been having two variations of a nightmare vision:

1. While stringing it up, the tailpiece gives and slaps me in the face. Subvariations of this involve me losing an eye or being horribly scarred, forcing me to wear sunglasses and grow a bushy beard.

2. While practicing with Torch Singer, the tailpiece gives out, slingshotting across the room and smacking Teresa in the face. Which, leaves her horribly scarred forcing her to grow a big bushy beard and wear sunglasses. (To be honest, I was more concerned about variation 2).

In fact, variation 1 happened last night, although it just went, creeaaak POP—leaving all faces involved unscarred. My tailpiece design needs some work, which is a real shame, because next to the headstock it's my favorite piece. As you can see below, I made the point at which the tailgut attaches to the tailpiece too dainty. For a brief moment the bass was playing perfectly. I had it all tuned up with my perfect pitch (he said facetiously) to C# E B F. So as I brought it into tune the tension killed it—annihilation, catastrophe.
