Back to the Futur(ism)

"I will work and I too will progress."
—Giacomo Balla

Back in March of 2015 I was delving deep into Futurism through sketching, online research and for the first time since moving there, getting to really know the Skokie Library. This was all prompted by a conglomeration of factors occurring simultaneously: David Bowie and Eric Dolphy, a nostalgic late winter dive back to Champaign circa 2000 and the "calf of surrealism" (Frank Maugeri).

The idea was to create a show with Redmoon Theatre in which an alien band of futurists crashes to earth and plays some rock n roll. I was going build instruments, costumes, write songs and produce paintings…

As is the way of things, life got in the way. It was the beginning of the end of my marriage, the bass I was building turned into firewood and within the year Redmoon would be no more. The project didn't happen. So why bring it up now? Well, it would seem a new conglomeration of factors have presented themselves.

For the last two years I've turned inward, spending time alone in the woods, solitary in my reflection—can I trust my intentions? Reconnecting with my gut which was confused and lost for over a decade. And now, I'm beginning to look outward feeling like it's time to trust myself again in the big bad world.

It's two years later, March of 2017 (I'm beginning to think late winter is a moment of great importance). The end of the end of my marriage has happened and it's time to start a new story. As old relationships take on new meaning, new relationships develop and I make my quiet attempts to emerge from a hermetic and taciturn period of life all this is a long way of getting to the point.

A site I frequently visit, Artsy who's mission is to make art available to anyone with an internet connection, contacted me. They came across my delve into Futurism and simply asked if I would link over to their page on Giacomo Balla. So of course I will.
